On December 28, two 700TEU electric container ships N997 and N998 built by CHI (Yangzhou) for COSCO Shipping Development were successfully named .

The world's first 700TEU electric container carries an intelligent ship system consisting of integration platform, navigation, cabin and energy efficiency. It is the world's first electric container ship in terms of overall length, width, number of boxes, dwt and battery capacity. The ship adopts battery-powered propulsion for the whole voyage, with an L*B size of 119.8m* 23.6m, and a maximum speed of 19.4 km/h. The total capacity of the battery is more than 50,000 kWh, which can be renewed through the box-type mobile power supply, a fixation of long charging time, low loading capacity and short range of the traditional electric container ship.

It is expected that a single ship can reduce carbon dioxide emissions of 2,918 tonnes, equivalent to 2,035 family cars a year, or 160,000 trees. It is reported that the first ship "COSCO Shipping Green Water 01" has been ready to go, and will be put into the Yangtze River shipping from Jiangsu to Shanghai.
